Pauline Oliveros
One of USA's pioneering composers of minimalist music alongside La Monte Young and Terry Riley. Although her early works were for electronics and tapes, Oliveros is most renowned for her work with her accordion which is tuned, much like Young, to just intonation. The resulting drones are simply hypnotizing and very rewarding if the listener is armed with a bit of patience as the harmonies might not be as obvious for untrained ears. Oliveros has even founded the Deep Listening Institute, giving workshops promoting a new approach to music and the arts.
Although I've been somewhat familiar with Oliveros' work for quite some time now, it took years before I decided to actually purchase any of her work. I had heard some mp3s, almost went to a performance she was giving here in Montreal a few years back; I liked what I heard, but I guess I just wasn't ready to actually buy anything... until Important Records re-released some of her early works on two absolutely stunning albums. These were a great "re-introduction" to her work and I urge all fans of drone to check these out.
