Jim O'Rourke

National Flag

A man of many faces. The equivalent of God in independent/experimental music as he seems to be omnipresent. Whether it be as a producer, band member, collaborator, solo artists, or as just about anything you could imagine: O'Rourke has done it! It seems impossible to fathom that this guy even gets a second of sleep. There is simply no way you haven't crossed his name somewhere in your record collection. Producer, sometimes member of Stereolab? Check! Permanent member of Sonic Youth? Check! Collaborated with every single artist known to man, from Fennesz to Loren Connors? Check, check and double check!! The man has simply done it all! And if he's done it all, it's because the man has talent, and knows his stuff.

I remember seeing his early record for Tzadik and imagining he was probably some old fart composer whom I'll never hear from again. Boy was I wrong! He then showed up on my (then) favorite record label Skin Graft, playing in many different groups, from Yona-Kit to his own Brise-Glace. But the his name just started popping up everywhere and it was impossible to avoid it. Although I do not know all that much about his personal work, I do respect the man very much for his support for the indie scene and his roll in promoting it.
