Oval
Markus Popp (aka Oval and one half of Microstoria) is one of my favorite electronic artists. His music is often cold and distant but there is something very attractive about it. He is mostly known for his manipulation of skipping CD sounds. Indeed, if someone is unaware of what this artist is up to, they might believe there is actually a problem with the CD. But if you listen closely, you can hear small details creeping into the song and making a tune out of the hazardous sounds. This is not for everyone's tastes, it is very difficult music and it is sometimes very noisy, but once you get past that, the sounds really start to shine.
Oval went on to become somewhat of a "hip" artist to know if you enjoy electronic music, not only because Björk is a huge fan of his work (even using him to produce some of her songs, notably on Vespertine), but also because his music has been used in Harmony Korine's Dogma contribution Julien Donkey-Boy. If hip people think your hip, then you must be hip. Although I don't see what might be considered so cool about Oval's music, it is just too distant and "digital"; but then again who am I to say what's hip or not. The only thing that bothers me however is that hip usually becomes a fad and I find this music to be timeless.
