Päivänsäde
Groups from the finnish underground are probably sick and tired of being categorized as "forest folk", the tag surfaces quite often in reviews on the net and in magazines, but the primitive and mystical nature of their sound fit really well with the pagan ideas behind the "genre". You can easily imagine them playing along in a clearing at the full moon, accompanied by owls, wolves and Moomins. Päivänsäde means "ray of sunshine" in finnish and is apparently used as an endearing nickname for children and loved ones. When you listen to their music however, the word takes on a whole new meaning, a very primitive one, as if the Sun it refers to should be considered as one of the four elements. Their use of simple instruments, things found in the kitchen, old toy boxes and pawn shop guitars sounds tribal, vague and free. I sometimes hear weak hints of jazz at times under the psych folk surface. Obviously a prominent member of the finnish underground scene, Päivänsäde is another group to add to the list of bands you can't avoid listening to if you are a fan of all things "suomi".
