Pärson Sound
Once again my search for new, far-out sounds has led me to discover this, what I believe to be the most exciting rock band ever to come out of sticky-sweet Sweden. Who would have imagined that something this heavy, this psychedelic and just plain experimental could have come out of the same country whose main musical exports at the time were Abba and Björn Skifs (well, that's a bit later on, but it's just to make a point)!? Sweden would later become a huge producer of death metal bands, but regardless of the rebellious nature of this music, all the bands would obey certain rules and would have to fit in with certain characteristics to "enjoy" being categorized as such. This resulted in much of these bands sounding exactly the same from one to the other. Pärson Sound on the other hand did not follow any rules... they wanted to play rock, heavy rock, and a chance meeting with Terry Riley would change their perspective of what rock "should" sound like.
This re-thinking gave birth to one of the most drone-oriented rock ensembles ever in the history of the genre. Each song is a long, painfully slow jam which slowly builds up character and pace until it either ends or fades out. The group have never put out a proper album and what is available today are rare live events put to tape. These recordings, under the Pärson Sound name, were made between the years 1967-68 but never officially released. The 2001 double CD collection is the first time this material was made available to a wider audience. They would oft change moniker later on in their career, the sound would remain true in spirit, but they were never going to sound as experimental and wild as they do here.
