Peaches
Peaches is a dirty girl... A dirty... DIRTY girl! But we all love her for that. It barely takes two seconds into a song to realize what we have gotten ourselves into. Using a minimal, electro-punk pop background, Peaches tells us all about the birds and the bees, but not exactly how you learned about them during recess at school. No, this lady does it with a 2 X 4 upside the head. Raw and unforgiving, it's the relentless torrent of explicit lyrics that will first catch your attention; and believe me, she gives all your favorite hardcore rap artists a good run for their money (N.W.A. and 2 Live Crew COMBINED couldn't exceed this level of seediness). And so the tables have turned. Alone, she has managed to stir up quite a ruckus and successfully mirrored the image men have made of women in the hip-hop scene. Boy has she got our number! I see her as a Gillette for the new millennium (with more talent).
Once the lyrics have lost a bit of their initial shock, it's the music that then reaches our ears. Equipped with the almighty Roland MC-505 only, she and fellow german and canadian cohorts have created some of the most infectious, dirty and downright addictive pop albums of the decade. Seriously! Ever since this album came out, it had "cult" written all over it! It's no wonder it's still so popular during parties both at home and downtown. This is the second time own this album. I had lent it to a good friend a few years back and never saw it again (I'd love to get those exclusive stickers that came with my first copy!). However, I did get to hear it plenty more times since then, most notably during a party on an island just outside of Montreal. The place had a huge dance floor among the trees, a bonfire, tons of friends and strangers, booze, drugs, everything... and then Fuck The Pain Away started blasting away in the six foot tall speakers as ashes rained from the sky! What a fucking wonderful experience! For this alone I promised myself to cherish this woman's music regardless of how big the hype became (God knows how big she is among the artsy, pretentious, metrosexual crowd - it's was simply cool to be able to name drop her, but she is definitely worth more than to be a flavor of the month).
Similarly to label mate Chilly Gonzales, Peaches is originally from Canada, but moved to Germany to pursue her music career which gave way to several more albums and many collaborations.
