Krzysztof Penderecki
I've heard of the name Penderecki for quite some time. My first exposure was with his work on the Stanley Kubrick version of Stephen King's The Shining. So right away there was some interest in him on my part, but I never went along and bought anything just because of the association. I did however become much more fascinated with him after seeing the film The Saragossa Manuscript by Wojciech Has on the big screen during a Polish film festival in Montreal a few years back. I had, up until that point, always associated Penderecki with pompous symphonic works which could easily fit on big film scores, but this one was completely different. I was very interested in psychedelic rock music at the time, weird experimental compositions and the soundtrack to this 1965 film sounded like a bit of both. It was incredibly strange, like the film and went against all my expectations.
This is a very important aspect to me when discovering music. To be surprised and having an artist dare break out of the mold he/she has been associated with. Penderecki might have gone on to make more conventional compositions, much less strenuous works, but there will always be the early period for the weird kids to look back to.
