P.G. Six
Patrick Gubler (aka P.G. Six) might helm from the mighty Tower Records collective which has also spawned the incredibly prolific MV/EE duo, but his sound is quite unique. Yes it is incredibly psychedelic and still rooted in folk, but whereas his fellow band mates often keep their sound at an incredibly primitive level, P.G. Six seems to have a much more developed sense of composition. Here you will find melodic chord progressions and more complex song structures instead of atonal and repetitive melodies or drones. What hits the listener first when putting on one of this artist's albums is the passionate tone of these pastoral tunes; there is deep sense of melancholia buried under the layers of appalachien folk and psychedelia which might actually make these albums more accessible to a wider audience.
Even though they are stylistically different, I hear similarities between P.G. Six' sound and that of legendary obscuro-folk outfit Comus. Both compose extended pieces with many melodic changes and both have a very dark, ominous vibe that shines forth. Fans of the aforementioned Comus, John Fahey and the more contemporary Six Organs Of Admittance should definitely check this out.
