Pole
Around the turn of the millennium, when IDM and the electronica scene was the latest craze, Pole (aka Stefan Betke) was one of it's biggest names. More and more artists would strip their sound to the point where certain albums had an almost spectral feel. Pole was one of the first few to venture into this territory while having his own signature sound. After dropping a Waldorf 4-Pole on the floor, Betke noticed that the equipment was still functioning, but it would now also emit a soft crackling noise constantly. The vinyl-like sounds would then be manipulated to create rhythms and textures accompanied by minimalist melodies which would often incorporate elements of dub. Using this unique sound to his advantage (and even using the faulty machinery's name as his own moniker), Betke was thus able to stand out from the crowd, creating fascinating soundscapes with a bizarre vintage feel. After his first trilogy, Pole ventured in different directions with less success.
