Primal Scream
Let's get one thing straight from the get-go. I am not a Primal Scream fan! Never have been and probably never will. I don't even like their early period or even enjoy later albums like the classic (to most) Screamadelica. But! I respect them. I respect them for changing so often and not being shy of showing where they come from, their hard rock, punk roots. I've known about them ever since their videos started playing regularly on the alternative shows on MusiquePlus here in Quebec (our own version of MTV). Their flower-power, glam look really turned me off and I disliked most shoe-gazer bands (except The Cure and My Bloody Valentine), in fact, I disliked most of the British scene during the nineties. It was only in early 2000 that I started paying attention
I was working in a music store in downtown Stockholm at the time and XTRMNTR had just been released and someone was playing it in the store. Fuck! This was some really intense shit! I'm hearing some kid asking to "kill all hippies, a few minutes later the word fuck is repeated loud and clearly at least twelve times in a row. What the hell was this? The incredibly funky bassline and the feedbacking guitar madness were teasing my ears! I had to find out what it was, so I pick up the CD at the DJ booth and check it out. "Nice cover", I think... Primal Scream!? This isn't Primal Scream! They don't sound this way! What!? I was floored. This album was incredible, aggressive as all hell and all prejudice I felt towards this band fell immediately and I bought the album. I've played the album inside out and used it till the plastic which covered the metallic layer was sworn off. Unfortunately, this was another album I later got rid of to finance my move to Sweden, but I do plan on getting it and others back... just not the earlier albums.
