Prurient
Equipped with only a microphone and a tape recorder (and probably a few effects), Dominick Fernow, aka Prurient, is a one-man noise machine. Using anything but traditional instruments, Fernow is like a hyper-active kid in his mother's kitchen or his father's tool shed, mashing up different objects together and finding interesting sounds out of practically nothing. This minimal approach might sound thin at first, but it's actually far more interesting than many other noise artists going the white noise way (in fact, besides Merzbow and few other japanese artists, there are very few artists who make the all-out electro noise genre interesting). I had heard the name Prurient for quite a while, associated with other noise rock bands like Lightning Bolt (through his Load Records releases) and Double Leopards, yet I hesitated for a long time before actually purchasing anything by this artist. Not because I thought I wouldn't like it, au contraire, I knew I was going to like it and then start collecting his work. Anyone who enjoys the more creative side of noise music, fans of the aforementioned bands, Hototogisu, Wolf Eyes or even early Einstürzende Neubauten should check this out.
