Rachel's
-This is the music to listen to when you want to commit suicide!. That was my first description of Rachel's music. I was maybe sixteen or seventeen years old at the time and of course, this comment got me intrigued so I investigated a bit. Perhaps it was those odd adolescent years that drove my friend to exaggerate the dark nature of Rachel's music, but to me there was absolutely nothing gloomy or depressing about their sound. In fact, I found it extremely beautiful from day one and it's thanks to them that I initiated my ears to classical music. Rachel's might not be classical music per say, but it does involve some of it's aesthetics. Imagine yourselves a chamber quartet with a drummer and a piano. Add some incredible build-ups and sad minor piano chords and you've got a good idea what to expect. True some of their work is somewhat ominous and creepy, but those moments are scarce in comparison with the fragility that shines throughout most of their output.
The first album I bought by Rachel's was Music For Egon Shiele and it had me hooked right from the start and I've been a fan ever since. Unfortunately, like many other artists in my collection, I sold the CDs in 2003 to finance my trip to Sweden. Fast forward four years and here I am, aching to get them back. Thankfully, I managed to find two used albums to get things started. This is truly one of a kind music which will please fans of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and perhaps even Tortoise. Their sound has changed slightly throughout the years, slowly moving away from traditional classical forms towards more experimental territory. Not always as mesmerizing, but still original.
