Lou Reed
I am not very familiar with The Velvet Underground's ex-frontman's solo work. What I've heard until now, like ex-colleagueJohn Cale's own solo work, sounds quite conventional and seems to have lost the experimental edge of his earlier years. There was some glam/punk touches here and there, I plan on getting these eventually, but they're nothing I believe I'll truly appreciate. I respected the man, but didn't expect so much of his solo work... That is until I read an article about noise music in Wire magazine which considered Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music to be the "granddaddy" of the modern noise album. Didn't Reed only keep himself to simple rock tunes now? What's this all about? I had to check it out by myself. After reading about the controversy behind the album, I was all the more fascinated and ordered the album off the internet immediately. I won't go into details about the album itself, you can read about it on this page, but suffice to say it single-handedly boost my respect for this artist tenfold and confirmed with me that he still had this desire to shock and experiment.
