Radio-friendly songs are usually three minutes in length, the part with commercial appeal is usually repeated three times within this time frame. So, if you cut away the excess fat, every pop song is, in essence, only one minute long. This is the basis of The Residents The Commercial Album for which they have created their own "top forty" list comprised of songs that are exactly one minute in length. Of course, there isn't the slightest bit of commercial appeal in any of these tracks. The songs are quite varied however, making this a great place to start if you are unfamiliar with the group. Highlights include the songs which were also made into the early videos (all have videos now on the DVD): Perfect Love, Act Of Being Polite, Simple Song and Moisture. Using the "shuffle" feature on a CD-player is great fun with this particular album as it makes it sound "new" at every listen. |
