With Eskimo, The Residents have created something quite different, even by their standards. No pop songs here, just electronic soundscapes recreating eskimo culture and nature. Liner notes are included to accompany the "music", helping your mind create it's own mental film of the events you are hearing. It's almost like "watching" a nature documentary. Of course, any documentary wouldn't have any real value without any insight and/or social commentary. In this case, The Residents trace down (among other things) the fall of Eskimo culture when pitted against the invading corporate industries. Commercial jingles sneak their way into traditional eskimo song who slowly but surely give way to the western way of life. This is, of course, only one layer of meaning that can be applied to this album. You are free to dig deeper if you wish and try and uncover more abstract meaning behind it all. |
