Album Cover

This is one of several Residents albums I truly disliked. It was interesting as an early conceptual CD-Rom "world" where one could visit an old fashioned freak show as a young boy, but the music by itself is far from being as fascinating as the freaks. Filled with atonal, barely memorable child-like melodies played almost exclusively on synthesizers; it sounds more like elevator music than truly experimental music. Not only that, but the spoken bits that surface throughout the recording are more obnoxious than the music itself. There are a few passages of pure Residential brilliance (the chorus from Harry The Head), but these are too few to keep my attention for more than a few seconds. Thankfully, this new edition of Freak Show comes with a bonus DVD including the visuals from the original CD-Rom (these are far more fun than the music) and the booklet also includes the rare comic book which was released alongside the album.
