You could easily spend hours, if not days trying to figure out all the obscure and subtle references to sixties pop tunes throughout these two "suites" (the piano intro to The Doors' Light My Fire reduced to a simple escalating arpeggio is a good example on Hitler Was A Vegetarian). The whole "radio-as-fascist-propaganda" theme was probably quite relevant when this came out, but I find it especially true today when radio stations will play the same song over and over again until you are submitted into enjoying it. You don't choose what you like, the radio executives and big business do it for you. This laziness is dangerous and I believe that this is the idea behind the record. Of course, it's not as simple as that, The Residents are renowned for their love/hate relationship with pop music (and especially The Beatles). There's plenty to discover on this classic album, a must have for Residents fans. |
