Reynols

National Flag

Ah Reynols! South America's most (in)famous avant-garde, drone-rock, what-the-hell-is-it-all-about-anyways group. There's just no telling what these guys are up to from one release to another. Who's on it? Will it be rock? Will it be drone? Will there be instruments at all? It's a total mess, but that's how we like them. Not only are Reynols weird musically, even their history is bizarre, full of holes and mysteries. They were apparently the house band for a day time talk-show in Argentina. They are reported to have played a concert for plants. They supposedly have an "dematerialized" CD out there somewhere. A lot of the group's nonsensical ideas apparently originated from Miguel Tomasin, their drummer/singer with Down syndrome. There's a lot of controversy around this, many people believe the group use Miguel only to promote through sensationalism - the group have often refuted this and recently have put the Reynols project on hiatus to let the dust settle down. There's a great interview with the group here which might help you figure out who and what Reynols actually are.

I first heard about Reynols while browsing for Faust records on eBay. The Beta-Lactam Ring Records label compared them to Faust while trying to sell the group's Pacalirte Sorban Cumanos which was their latest album at the time. In the item description were links to mp3 samples. Curious, I took a listen and indeed, there was definitely some krautrock-ish sounds on this album. When I finally read about them and found out about Miguel, I was even more fascinated (yes, he was the reason I actually went out and bought one of their records). I thought it was a great idea and I'm sure Miguel is having the time of his life getting this type attention. At that point, I tried to find everything they had released but I gave up quite quickly when I realized how eclectic and impossible to find most of these outings were (I got the same feeling trying to collect all of Wolf Eyes' releases.

I've been buying their records when I find the opportunity worthwhile, but I'm in no hurry to get them all. There's even the many variations and side projects of the band to consider: Reynols/No-Reynols (!?), Anla (Alan) Courtis, Courtis, etc... Regardless of how unbearable some of the noise the band has produced is, I find the whole concept behind the group interesting and fascinating. Even if you don't plan on collecting their records, there are a few that should definitely be hunted down.
