Domenico Scarlatti
One of the best known composers for the harpsichord, Domenico Scarlatti (son of Alessandro) composed 555 sonatas for the instrument throughout his lifetime and gained considerable fame in Spain, Portugal and England. I began listening to this man's work after I decided to start a quest to find original recordings found in the early works of polish filmmaker Walerian Borowczyk. In his movie La Bête, there is a maddening Scarlatti sonata (Sonata In A Major, K. 209) played over-and-over-and-over again during a fifteen minutes segment towards the end of the film. I have yet to find the original recording which includes the version from the film, but my quest has also permitted me to enjoy this man's music in the meantime. The album I own with Wanda Landowska as a performer is particularly great. If anyone out there knows from which original recording it's from, I would love to hear from you.
