Klaus Schulze
Schulze is an absolute legend of the whole german underground scene, the Jim O'Rourke of krautrock. He has been in many now legendary bands from the era, playing drums for both Ash Ra Tempel and Tangerine Dream, and he's been active ever since. Not only that but the music he has created spans pretty much every imaginable genres throughout the years, from heavy psych to new-age!
I decided to check out his music because of his involvement with the first Ash Ra Tempel record (which I love!). Someone told me his earlier efforts were more experimental and worthwhile. Even though I tend to agree with this statement, I have listened to some of the later stuff, music that many people would categorize as new-age (which is usually pejorative), and I believe there remains a certain will to sound different and "difficult". It might sound pleasant to the ears, but relaxation music this is not. His more techno-oriented work with Pete Namlook of Fax Records are also quite interesting.
