Six Organs Of Admittance

No one captures the psychedelic folk vibe of the late sixties/early seventies better than Ben Chasny and his main project Six Organs Of Admittance. Listening to one of his albums is like discovering a weird LP from an obscure artist in some garage sale and finding out that the recording is absolutely wonderful and no one except you and the artist knows of it's existence. There's something magical about Chasny's work in the way his music comes off as both very personal and mysterious. From his earlier, lo-fidelity recordings to the later, sleeker sounding albums, each one bares his signature sound and all give off the same aura of mystique. There's a perfect balance between Chasny's folk leanings and his will to experiment which has helped him garner much praise from both the above and underground scene. But don't get me wrong, this group's sound spans much wider than just folk and psych; there are some obvious middle-eastern, far-eastern asian, some african and even some spaghetti western influences at times.

It took me quite some time to go ahead and purchase some of his work. I remember listening to some albums back in the days when I was buying old psychedelic and krautrock records left and right, but probably because I was focusing on older records, I decided to wait before getting anything of his. Years have passed since then and Six Organs Of Admittance have skyrocketed in the hearts of music fans worldwide, but still I waited. When the group finally released an album on Manhand, I decided to go ahead and get everything I could find (which cost me a small fortune). I regret being so late in jumping on the bandwagon, but it's never too late to enjoy a good thing. Chasny is also a member of Portland neighbors Comets On Fire and Badgerlore.
