By the time Slayer released this album, they had already garnered a wide cult following. By releasing a video for the title track, which actually played on MTV at the time, they had now reached the status of metal-Gods. Everyone who hadn't heard of them before got their first glimpse at one of the most extreme metal acts of the time in action... and they couldn't have chosen a better tune to do this. The song isn't one of those quick trash tunes which they were renowned for, but it was heavy as fuck and as dark as anything they've done before. It opened the door to their body of work. No one could accuse them of having sold out either, the music on this album is as uncompromising as it has always been. Opener War Ensemble is heavy as anything found on their infamous Reign In Blood. This album concludes my trilogy of Slayer masterpieces, I moved on to other things after it (The Cure!). |
