A great early effort by Sonic Youth, the music was still quite dark and gloomy at this point; the guitars atonal and drowned in huge slabs of overly distorted bass. The melodies and hooks which would show up on later efforts are still in their larvae state here (only Death Valley '69 really bring out the chops and is actually danceable - there's a beat! - in a shoe-gazer kind-of-way). Most of the songs here are quite difficult to listen to but it's a great place to start if you are interested in Sonic Youth's more experimental releases. My favorite track of the album is Flower with it's great angry vocals by Kim Gordon. Can't say I've been listening to this album as much as the other more accessible ones, but I truly believe it is a classic Sonic Youth release and the best of their very earliest efforts. |
