I hadn't listened to this album in years (at least five) when I finally bought it again. From memory, I don't remember liking it all that much back then, but listening to it now, with "fresh ears" feels like I am rediscovering the album all over again and I have a new found fondness for the madness on display. Many people have accused Sonic Youth of selling out at this point, the video for 100% brought them instant success on MTV, but besides this success, the music on Dirty is way too heavy to have been considered a commercial success. I still love this first single, it's crammed with so much teen angst that it oozes like oily skin, but it's far from being my favorite. That honor would have to go to their frenzied Drunken Butterfly. When the song breaks down towards the middle, I become hypnotized. This deluxe edition of Dirty (like Goo) comes with a second CD filled with demos and extra material. |
