To this day, Evol remains my favorite Sonic Youth album. I don't hear a single weak tune throughout, from the incredibly moody Tom Violence to the energetic and amusing Bubblegum via the haunting Secret Girl. Perhaps my personal attachment to this album is due to the fact that I used Shadow Of A Doubt on the soundtrack of my very first student film. Hearing it brings me back to this period of my life when I was still full of hopes and dreams of becoming a film director (fate would have it otherwise, the priorities have changed, but as of today, I still haven't given up on this dream). By this time, Sonic Youth's sound had become fuller and richer, no more primitive caveman rock; the noise was still there, but they had found a more creative way of using it. Their trademark "lazy" sound had reached it's peak, but the gloom had taken a back step and let elements of pop seep in. |
