Album Cover

I've listened to this album so many times it practically grew into me. It was the first Sonic Youth I had ever bought and I was so obsessed by it as a young teenager that I even spent one whole lonely afternoon carefully recreating the artwork with a black felt pen on a large sheet of paper. Kool Thing was the first song I heard from the band (I was 13 when this came out) and I fell in love with it immediately! The song had such a loud and sexy vibe that it put a spell on this pimply-faced, hormonally-charged teen. Not only that, but they were the only alternative band at the time who would not frown upon the hip-hop scene of the time (Chuck D of Public Enemy is featured on this track). There are of course many other highlights, including Dirty Boots (which reminds me a bit of Teen Age Riot) and Titanium Exposé. The deluxe edition comes with a second CD filled with demos and exclusive material.
