I consider Sister to be Sonic Youth's transitional album, it had started on Evol, but the pop elements had really seeped in by this point and would later explode on Daydream Nation and Goo. One listen to Schizophrenia and you'll understand. This song has such an incredibly beautiful bridge where Kim Gordon sings over the two guitarists playing harmonics on the guitar until they build up towards the song's noisy climax. They also seem to have mastered the art of blending noise and feedback into more accessible songs at this point in their career ((I Got A) Catholic Block). Like it's predecessor, Sister doesn't have a single miss, each song here is a classic early Sonic Youth track. Anyone new to this legendary group couldn't do any wrong by starting here. The album includes a fun parody/homage to the early NY hip-hop scene (including samples!) with the noisy Sonic Youth touch. Classic!
