This is the first time I've owned and actually heard Sonic Youth's very first release. There's a strong no wave vibe to these songs, especially on The Burning Spear, but you can also hear the roots of the group's later efforts; the jangly, detuned guitars, Thurston's howling vocals and the bizarre, half-plucked melodies. It's mostly the bass that reminds of no wave punk bands like Wire (circa 154). I Dreamed I Dream has a cool beat which reminds me of the soundtrack to George Romero's Dawn Of The Dead. The EP sounds quite primitive and bare-boned, but as a formative document of one of the most influential aternative bands in history, it's priceless. You can even hear some similarities with the works of Glenn Branca at times, an artist both Moore and Ranaldo have collaborated with. This edition of the EP comes with eight additional bonus tracks, including some live and studio material. |
