The SYR series of records is supposed to show off Sonic Youth's more experimental side, but besides the lack of vocals and the slightly more improvisational nature of these recordings, it's difficult to hear just how these jams differ from the ones on their studio albums. Knowing that Thurston Moore is also behind the Ecstatic Peace label, home of such artists as NNCK and early Sunburned Hand Of The Man, I was expecting this record to be one hell of a mind-fuck. But besides Mieux: De Corrosion, the closing track, there isn't much insanity on display here; and unfortunately, this last track lasts less than seven minutes. This was what was expected and we get so little of it. Later albums in the series would be more faithful to the label's original intentions. Perhaps this one was meant not to scare off too many Sonic Youth fans, but on a whole, it isn't particularly fascinating material in my book.
