Director Jodorowsky's background in mime and the circus often surface in the music of his second full length feature film El Topo (The Mole). The movie is a slow moving psychedelic twist on the spaghetti western genre, complete with esoteric visions and religious themes. Pretty wild stuff, but the music somewhat suffers without the accompanying images. Composed by Jodorowsky himself (with John Barham on some tracks), the score to the film sounds pretty tame and unexceptional for such an imaginative director. A few songs do stand out however: La Catedral De Los Puercos with it's wailing reed instruments and haunting organ melody is pretty mesmerizing as are the tribal rhythms of 300 Conejos. The opening and closing theme song on flute, simple as it is, are quite beautiful and impossible to disassociate from the film. This soundtrack had previously been available (and highly sought after) on vinyl. |
