This is quite a treat for Jodorowsky fan. For the longest time, this bizarre psychedelic trip of a film had been most difficult to even see, available only on third rate pirated video copies or censored editions. So to finally get to see it in a restored edition after so many years feels like seeing it all over again. Not only that, but along with this new edition box set comes, for the very first time, the isolated soundtrack to the film. As much as the score for El Topo (also included in the box set) left me somewhat unimpressed, this soundtrack has captivated me. The music is as strange and fascinating as the film. The creepy, droning monk vocals and chimes of Trance Mutation, the horrifying Cast Out And Pissed, the confusing Fuck Machine and the breathtaking Rainbow Room are only some of the many highlights to be heard. Jodorowsky is behind the compositions once again and is this time joined by Ronald Frangipane and the great Don Cherry. |
