I am not a huge fan of this gothic tale by czech new wave director Jaromil Jireš, but there is no denying that the soundtrack by Luboš Fišer is devastatingly beautiful. It's no wonder so many artists today are raving about it. Broadcast, Fursaxa and Greg Weeks (the two latter have even worked on The Valerie Project which consists of creating a new soundtrack to the film live on stage). I remember watching the movie and not being so much hypnotized by the images (although the film's intro is quite haunting) as with the music. Truly this is a case where the music completes (and even surpasses) the film it is meant for. It's a miracle we can actually listen to these sounds today as the film itself had been difficult to find since it fell into obscurity over thirty years ago. Believe me, this is as classic a soundtrack as Rosemary's Baby was, an obscure gem just waiting to be discovered all over again. If only the film were as incredible. |
