Speed, Glue & Shinki
Speed, Glue & Shinki is a japanese heavy psych group which shares members with Foodbrain and legendary Philippines group Juan De La Cruz. They remain surprisingly unknown even though the music is quite accessible (when they don't go off the deep end - which is rare). It is definitely rooted in blues, with Deep Purple-esque heavy guitar riffs, some Morricone spaghetti western leanings and one-hundred percent stoner (with song titles like they have, you have to be!). If you wouldn't know the group were from Japan, you couldn't possibly be reproached for mistaking them for an american band; first off, the music is very american and contrary to similar countrymen Flower Travellin' Band, the singer has no accent (it even sounds like he has a southern accent!).
Having purchased Foodbrain and Taj-Mahal Travellers CDs, I decided to research deeper into the japanese psych scene of the seventies. Julian Cope (who is not usually a reference for me, although I do like his taste in music) also praises them on his Head Heritage website. I heard about Speed, Glue & Shinki by name only, but wasn't ready to actually order their albums. It was only when I found a copy of their self-titled album at a decent price in a small specialized music store in Stockholm that I actually got to hear them. I owned this CD for quite a while until I purchased the beautiful official japanese editions from Leaf Hound Record and sold my old copy on eBay.
