Continuing along the same laid back line as he did with Music Is Rotted One Note, the Budakhan Mindphone EP (the first of three releases by the artist in 1999) is another excursion into jazz-fusion territory with touches of digital experimentations and world music influences. Gong Acid for example sounds like a modern "loft" version of Indonesian gamelan music. Most of these tunes have a dreamy quality to them which, although more jazz-oriented, still reminded me of label mates Boards Of Canada's melancholic vibe (this is especially true on opening track Iambic 5 Poetry). Beats do feature a lot more than they did on Music Is Rotted One Note, but the progression between both releases is apparent and fun to analyze. But just when you thought things couldn't get any more unique and fascinating than this, there was still better stuff on the way in 1999. |
