I love how Squarepusher's music can be extremely complex yet quite upbeat and accessible at the same time. The opening Squarepusher Theme for example sounds like this mellow lounge bit which constantly interfered with complex, hyperactive beats. It's all quite disorienting, but fun at the same time (Smedley's Melody is an even more extreme example which also features Jenkinson's bass playing). of course the album isn't just sunshine and rainbows; many songs are much darker and austere like the gloomy Tundra or U.F.O.'s Over Leytonstone. However, Squarepusher manages to make the album varied enough not to turn it into this one-dimensional gimmick. There's enough going on throughout these twelve songs to catch anyone's attention; seriously, this is the perfect album to discover Jenkinson's work. Even the weirdest filler tracks are a hoot! Visionary rave music which still sounds fresh today! |
