Squarepusher's first full length release for Warp Records is easily one of my two favorites by the artist (along with Selection Sixteen). Although it retained Jenkinson's ubiquitous drum'n'bass vs. jazz fusion sound, I also found there was more emphasis on melody this time around instead of the usual onslaught of beats and incessantly morphing sounds. Beep Street for example, is a very moody piece with a lovely rhodes piano melody and fake string pads; Jenkinson's insane beats don't contrast as much as they usually do here and actually lift the song to new levels. Aphex Twin's influence is quite obvious on a song like Anirog D9, but thankfully, Jenkinson has such a unique sound most of the time that he is able to stand out on his own. I really love it when the artist really pushes the jazzy elements to the maximum without ever losing it's IDM foundations as he does on Papalon and Fat Controller. An absolute IDM classic!
