This EP was Squarepusher's second (of three) releases for 1999 and it's a weird one. It features four songs by the artist and three remixes (one by Autechre and another by Wagonchrist). The opening track is an absolute curiosity in the artist's discography; I still don't know what to make of it! Song: Our Underwater Torch is an appropriate title given that it actually sounds like some sort of underwater funeral song; gloomy and wet are two adjectives that describe the track's atmosphere to a tee. We return to more familiar and stable grounds on Decathlon Oxide, which is easily my favorite track on the EP with it's funky drum'n'bass vibe and haunted house quality. You're Going Down sounds like the bastard child of cross between a Millions Now Living [...]-era Tortoise song with a demented schizophrenic patient's psychobabble. The three remixes which end the EP are fun, but unexceptional. |
