I found that Jenkinson's sound had drastically changed with this release. The jazz fusion elements had grown exponentially in size while as the drum'n'bass rhythms had almost completely vanished. This results in a much more experimental and serious record than usual. Not that Music Is Rotted One Note is not a fun listen, but this is the closest Squarepusher has come to a true jazz fusion record. I can hear the influence of Miles Davis' fusion era albums on most of these songs (check out the opening Chunk-S or even Shin Triad). I remember the album alienating me the first time I heard it, I missed the drum'n'bass beats, but with time the album grew on me and I believe today that - this - is the Squarepusher album that will stand the test of time. It might not be the most representative album by the artist, but it certainly is one of his most challenging and rewarding releases. Essential stuff, regardless of how you prefer your Squarepusher. |
