According to Jenkinson himself, Just A Souvenir was inspired by a daydream (or perhaps an hallucination) involving a strange rock band playing their ultimate "ultra-gig". His account of the dream deserves to be read on it's own. It's quite a psychedelic ride and Jenkinson manages to bring it all to life throughout these fourteen neon lit multicolored sonic explosions. The most surprising thing about the album is that although the Squarepusher sound is still recognizable (the artist once again plays all the instruments), the record succeeds in being completely different from past efforts at the same time. Funky one minute, heavy as fuck the next and completely baffling most of the time, this is what would happen if Bruce Haack, Johnny Ramone, Jaco Pastorius and Daft Punk had tried to sound like Infectious Grooves. It's pretty schizophrenic and might take a while to eat up, but give it time and Just A Souvenir becomes quite the tasty treat. |
