For me, there will always be two distinct phases in Stars Of The Lid's career. The pre and post Avec Laudanum phases. Everything after this album has a marked symphonic feel and a warmer sound which is absent from the harsher, darker sounds of their earlier albums. This remains ambient music without a doubt, but the austere atmosphere might scare away fans of later releases. Gravitational Pull [...] is definitely one of the most minimal records the duo has released... and also one of the darkest and grimmest. We're closer to Thomas Köner territory than the more pleasant soundscapes of Basinski. Still, through the thick grey clouds, there is a certain heavenliness which emanates on certain pieces. The closing track Be Little With Me is such a song. The drone might irritate some listeners at first, but upon closer inspection, peaceful melodies and strong soothing aspect will surface. Lovely, but not an easy listen. |
