Fans of the early, krautrock-ish period of Stereolab's career should certainly find a copy of this short (only four tracks) EP. It's chock full of those incredible metronome-like Neu! beats, distorted organ drones and beautiful vocal tandems which made us fall in love with the group from the beginning. Some songs do come as surprises though. (Varoom!) for example starts off as a usual kraut-pop tune, but at the mid point suddenly shifts gears into this very repetitive drum-beat-driven, My Bloody Valentine-inspired guitar drone mess. Quite impressive. Elektro is another similar tune, starting off with a two note organ melody drowned under layers of oscillating synth noises before it abruptly turns into a mellow acoustic tune. There's a strong air of experimentation here which, to me, makes it especially fascinating. The CD comes housed in a simple folded piece of cardboard inside a Ziploc. |
