This was the first release by the group after the untimely death of fellow band mate Mary Hansen whose back-up vocals would sorely be missed. This was another record I ignored upon it's release only to discover it much later in 2006. There isn't much new ground explored here, but Stereolab have such a specific sound, one wouldn't expect anything else. Their psychedelic and experimental side was definitely upped a notch this time as many bizarre passages surface throughout the record. The real surprise on Margerine Eclipse is the band's decision to bring the fuzz back into their sound (Margerine Rock!). "...Sudden Stars" is a good example of their capabilities to juggle between syrupy pop melodies and their heavier early-era tendencies. My only complaint with the record is that it sounds a bit all-over the place and lacks direction, feeling more like a collection of odds and ends than an album.
