When Stereolab released this album, I lost most of my interest in the band. I was really getting into the blooming IDM scene at the time and Stereolab's loungy tropicalia version of krautrock just didn't do it for me. This was the first record I didn't immediately purchase upon it's release. It took me six years to get it. I have to admit I still don't like Outer Bongolia, the ten-minute-long track sounds as irritating today as it did when I first listened to it (that xylophone drives me nuts)! The rest of the EP however is the classic, hypnotizing Stereolab we all know and love. Barock - Plastik is particularly good with it's groovy hook which will have you flashback in time to the psychedelic sixties. Household Names sounds like leftovers from the Emperor Tomato Ketchup sessions. You'd better get out of Laetitia Sadier's way on Retrograde Mirror Forms as she sounds REALLY pissed off! |
