A slight improvement over it's predecessor, Sound-Dust is still quite loungy but with a "weirder" vibe (that's good!). The single Captain Easychord with it's clashing rhythms and country music overtones is a case in point. The brass instruments and xylophone are still as present and they still sound annoying to these ears. The soundtrack to the wild animated film La Planète Sauvage by Alain Goraguer seems to have been an inspiration for some of these tracks as soft psychedelic sounds often surface here and there. The two part Gus The Mynah Bird is very interesting, but mostly for the second, electronic only part (think Cluster). Besides the single and Gus there are no real highlights; even though it's not a disappointing album, it still left me hungry for more and I know Stereolab are capable of better. If I want pop-lounge music, I'll listen to the early Cardigans albums, not this! I sorely miss the krautrock influences! |
