Another great work by Stereolab. Could they do no wrong so early on in their career? Truly this was a challenging group which had achieved pop perfection. There is not a weak tune on this album, from the pleasant mayhem of opener Tone Burst to the noisy, down tempo and hiply-titled closer Lock-Groove Lullaby. There is something in each tune which is appealing to the listener, either in the usual vocal harmonies, motorik guitar riffs or in the weird sounds that surface throughout. Speaking of which, there are samples from The Conet Project throughout the song Pause, but I have never heard of any legal troubles resulting from their use (unlike what happened to Wilco for their album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and the use of similar samples!). This album also includes the longest pop-single tune I have ever heard: Jenny Ondioline which lasts just over eighteen minutes!
