This second release sounds like the band in their practice space not doing much more then well... practicing! Like Mahogany Brain and Velvet Underground jamming together, but with the culture clash making it impossible for the two to channel each other's leads. There are some nice weird moments here, but in general, it just doesn't work all that well. This also reminded me of Sun Ra's Cosmic Tones For Mental Therapy, but without the edge. It really sounds like the group isn't letting themselves go completely, as if something was holding them back from really going all out. Only on the later tracks does the group sometimes come together (on the sixth untitled track for example). Regardless, this is a great stoner record. It's perfect music to enjoy in the background on a smoky afternoon (if you are so inclined). |
