This album is definitely on the free-side. Not as insane as Cosmic Tones or The Solar-Myth Approach, I could compare it more to other efforts like Other Planes Of There or The Magic City. The records starts off with the reed-in-a-galactic-blender of Celestial Fantasy; the delay effects on the drums really lift this track off the ground. None of the other numbers really capture the controlled insanity of this tune, but they're still no way close to standard jazz. Ecstasy Of Being is a good example of how out-there the Arkestra can be without having recourse to effects and electronic instruments. The title track is a nice laid back and soulful tune with bizarre percussive sounds to interrupt throughout. The album's highlight however, is the eighteen minute long Next Stop Mars which truly feels like a intergalactic bus ride to the red planet. The playing is extremely rapid and totally free and cosmic. |
