May God strike me down if The Residents haven't lifted the sax melody from Mu and used it on their own Guylum Bardot off of their first album Meet The Residents! This is one funky down-beat track, thanks to the keyboards. No matter how much the first five tracks sound funky and tribal, none of them can prepare you for the monster that is title track Atlantis. This is as close to a noise track Sun Ra has come. It is practically twenty-one minutes worth of solo synth work, but the band do intervene at times. But whether they are joining in or not, the whole song is a thick slab of noise practically throughout! High-pitched and abrasive most of the time, it is likely to put off many first time listeners (unless someone having a seizure over his keyboard sounds appealing to you). Insane stuff here, but it goes to show just how free and careless of the day's trends Sun Ra was. Totally ahead of his time! |
