To be honest, I purchased this album and paid for the import price because I loved the cover art. Yeah it's got progrock written all over it, but knowing how much Sun Ra is obsessed by space, I thought it was fitting and was expecting it to be one crazy psychedelic album. Well it's not as spaced-out as say Cosmic Tones [...], but that's just because of the first track which sounds pretty standard to me. But from the second track onwards, when Ra starts playing his "rocksichord" and the flanger effects come forth, we're off to a whole new world and the cover art suddenly starts to make a whole lot more sense. If it weren't for the keyboards and the occasional weird (and rare) noises, this album would sound pretty tame, but because of these, it's well worth seeking out (it was released on CD only in Japan!). The kick-ass bass work of R. Anthony Dunn is also well worth mentioning! |
