I knew I couldn't go wrong with this ESP-Disk release of Sun Ra's work. I've never been disappointed by the label yet and this one delivers the goods once again. Although not quite as over-the-top as Sun Ra can sometimes be, Nothing Is... remains some top-notch free jazz with quick excursions into traditional bebop. But even at his most standard, Sun Ra and co. are always soaring thousands of feet above the others. Dance Shadows starts the album off on a tamer note (even though the piece does include some out-there moments) before finally going supernova on Imagination. From then on, we're left to fend for ourselves and try to make sense out of all this clever madness. Each track threatens to fall apart at the fall of a pin, and at times it does, but just when you thought things were hopeless, the troupe manage to pull everything back into place for another go. Classic stuff, with Shadow World being an mandatory listen for fans.
